I made an AI short film!

I recently put together an short film produced almost entirely with AI. I know the quality is far, very far from professional studio’s, but to me, a computer nerd who can’t even spell correctically, is unbelieavable.

I know there’s controversy regarding AI art, particularly on the training of the models: people say they grabbed other people’s work to train without rewarding them, I think of it as “fair use” that produces “transformative” derivatives, but I’m actually not a lawyer and hey, if you’ve already made your mind, and you’re against this, I’m probably not going to convince you.

Let’s look past this argument for a moment, because I believe it will be overcome, either if courts rule that companies don’t need to pay or do need to pay for training, they will do it, the technology arrived to stay and it’s not going anywhere. They are already doing it, OpenAI signing deals with newspapers for content, Google with Reddit (for language models), Adobe’s using its own image database, etc.

As I said, the legal aspect will be overcome. The tech side will only get better. So if your best argument against genAI is the training, know this: they will find a way (even if it means compensating other people’s work for it). Probably not companies of all sizes but at least the bigger ones will.

So, the thing I want to express is this: I’m enabled to do something that just a few months ago I wouldn’t have been able to pull off just myself. It helps expressing ideas. I see it as a way to super charge creativity. People with skills are already creating really crazy good stuff, so it’s not just for the unskilled ones.

I really want to share the video (be warned: it’s not that amazing, you could argue it’s poorly made, and I would agree, but to me, it’s awesome), but I’m still looking at the legal and copyright aspects, not for the AI itself, but for the actual character (it’s a parody based on an existing intellectual property which I don’t own). So as soon as that’s cleared, or the film adjusted, I will set it free!

And to the naysayers, give this tech a try!

Und in den Fenstern Kerzenlicht
Dort liegen sie zu zweit
Und ich
Ich warte nur auf dich
